Bring the World to the Classroom

Why use newspapers in school? Newspaper-specific educational activities in classrooms are increasing as teachers try to keep up with our rapidly changing world. Newspapers bring present-day events to language arts, math, science, civics, social studies, geography, history and all other subjects. Recent studies from the University of Minnesota find that students who use the newspaper in schools score as much as 30% higher on standardized tests than those who do not have access to the newspaper. - Newspapers in Education - NIE - is a program of the Idaho Press-Tribune and The Messenger Index designed to assist today's educators in their mission to form tomorrow's life long learners.

- NIE is a cooperative effort of the Idaho Press-Tribune/Messenger Index, local businesses, vacationing subscribers, and the schools in Canyon, Gem, Owyhee, and Ada counties who use the newspaper as an educational tool.

- Educators are provided free access to newspapers, curriculum, workshops, and a myriad of educational enrichment on a daily basis throughout the school year.

- Sponsorship funds will be used exclusively to sponsor newspapers and other educational materials for Treasure Valley Schools.
