By Representative Bob Nonini

Representative Anderson has taken the lead to address an environmental issue with far reaching consequences. Experts recently testified that Idaho water ways are facing an expensive infestation of the invasive quagga and zebra mussels if we don't take action this spring. The mussels are already causing damage in many other states. The mussels reproduce and spread quickly, clogging machinery and water pipes and destroying native ecosystems. Once the mussels are established, they're nearly impossible to remove. Idaho's irrigation canals and ditches are at risk, as areHydroelectric dams, fish hatcheries, marinas and drinking water systems. If introduced to Idaho waterways, the costs to businesses, state agencies and individuals will be high. The stakes are toohigh for the state to do nothing to prevent it from happening

The Spokesman Review says: ... "After a long, packed hearing, the House Environment Committee voted overwhelmingly Tuesday to approve Rep. Eric Anderson’s quagga mussel bill, which requires every boat owner in the state – motorized or not – to purchase a sticker to help fund boat-washing efforts to keep the invasive shellfish out of Idaho waterways ... There was just one “no” vote on HB 213 in the committee, from Rep. Steve Kren, R-Nampa; the measure now heads to the full House for debate." ... ... Why did Rep. Kren vote "No?"

I'm writing about this on Topix.com, on my "Idaho Government" page. It will be interesting to hear responses and perspectives on the following questions. ***** “We’re not minimizing the problem of zebra mussels and their potential harmful impact on our state,” said Keith Roark, Idaho Democratic Party chairman. “But with so many big problems high on Idaho’s agenda, we’d expect the GOP to spend perhaps five minutes on that topic before moving on to the things that are on every Idahoan’s mind: whether they’ll have a job next month and whether the Legislature will raise taxes at a time when Idaho families and small businesses can least afford it.” ***** “Let’s hear about Republican plans for the money we’ll be getting from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act,” Roark added. “Will they use the stimulus money to create jobs and prevent draconian cuts to necessary services? Or will they continue to talk about declaring sovereignty from the United States?” ***** The url for my entry is: http://www.topix.com/state/id-gov/2009/03/democratic-party-says-radio-topics-show-how-they-are-far-more-in-tune-with-the-times-than-the-gop
