From my e-mail inbox to the road rides and mountain bike rides, the discussion this week is about the latest on Lance Armstrong and what it means for cycling. It's already obvious what his clavicle surgery means for Bontrager, a manufacturer of bike parts. Bontrager couldn't ask for better timing/better publicity to unveil its latest "must have" — its inForm CarbonClavicle.
The inForm CarbonClavicle was scheduled to be released at the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeon Convention May 18-24 in Las Vegas. But when Armstrong broke his clavicle on March 23 in Spain, the opportunity for launch was just too perfect.
Just like shoes, the latest advance in technology is available for both the left and right — four male sizes and four female sizes. Who needs clavicles anyway when a carbon fiber replacement is stronger, absorbs more shock, has greater impact strength and is a few grams lighter than your natural bones. And it gets better: since you just toss out the broken bone instead of mend it, the full-replacement gig takes only 30 minutes on the operating table and recovery time is 5-7 days instead of three weeks.
It will only be a matter of time before someone wants two healthy clavicles replaced to shave a few grams of weight instead of eating one less donut.
