The Idaho cycling community is maturing. I can recall shivering while waiting in line to register on the day of a race just a few years ago. Procrastination is human but it's wreaks havoc on planning and running a professional cycling event. One is beginning to see this warning on a lot of event postings: NO day of registration. Pre-register online. That meant as the starter for this Sunday's Jason Broome Time Trial, I was able, in the comfort of my home, to look on Thursday at how many riders were signed up in each of the categories. In that riders start one minute apart, I could do the math — for every 60 riders signed up, I'd be out in the cold for another hour. I could do my planning — at home — instead of making riders wait at the race site as the promoters/officials lined things out. Delaying the start of an event to accommodate people who want to sign up on race day meant everyone suffered in the past. This year another advantage of "pre-registration only" became evident. Mother Nature laid down a blanket of snow on the road south of Exit 71 between Boise/Mountain Home. Knowing the names/emails of every rider, one could notify everyone that the event has been rescheduled to April 4 instead of hoping everyone would find out by word of mouth and hope no one would drive out on race day to enter at the last minute for a postponed race. And for The Slammer on March 15 south of Boise, sign up now because . . . . you guessed it . . . . you can't sign up on race day.
