Do you think someone decided that Election Day should be a few days after Halloween because we usually see all the skeletons come out of candidate closets by the 31st of October?
I don't think I've ever thought about it that way, but this has been a spooky election season. Or maybe it's just been spooky for me because I've been at the office really late almost every night for the...read more

It's not everyday that I verbalize the things I wonder about. But I recently wondered out loud when I heard that the Canyon County Commissioners asked the public defenders — Klaus Wiebe and Scott Fouser — to stay until Sept. 30, even though they had been notified that their contract expired July 31.

We knew this story would stir emotions on both sides, but it has certainly garnered more attention than predicted.
First, we finally heard from the Department of Defense. The note defends the policy. It also chastizes our reporter for stating in the story that the Pentagon did not respond to a request for a comment.

But after reading this, it looks like the state potato commission gave the eatery a chance to license the word "Idaho" if only "Idaho" potatoes are used. The new company didn't want to do that.
It would have cost...read more

I'm glad David J. sent the e-mail. It's a good reminder that we don't always think the same way as a reader. But we'll get something in in the paper. In the meantime, the Legislature deserves...read more
This is Sunshine Week across America. It began in 2002 as an effort by the Florida Society of Newspaper Editors to draw attention to state legislators' attempts to create exemptions to Florida's public records law.
It's really great to see local government providing so much easily accessible light on records these days. Nampa city and now Canyon County are opening up their financial records...read more
