All the recent "flu" headlines, be it swine or the seasonal flu, have created quite a situation in our valley. They are telling us not to rush to the doctor or emergency room for treatment of flu like symptoms, yet how do you know what you have without an official diagnosis.

Take my daughter for example. She was home sick for three days last week. I didn't take her to the doctor, I simply treated her like she had the flu until she was better and could go back to her dorm room. Did she have the swine flu or just the regular flu? And if I don't know whether she had the swine flu, do I still need to get her vaccinated? See what I mean? It is a conundrum.

How many people have already dealt with the swine flu and are naturally immune to it now? If they don't want us to go to the doctor for our flu symptoms, how will we ever know? How many swine vaccinations will be given to people who have no need for it because of this? The whole thing is rather confusing.

Add to all this confusion the situation for school children. Schools don't want you to come sick, they are asking that we keep any ill children, no matter how slight the symptoms, home until they are completely better. The problem occurs when you align this request with the attendance policies of most schools. I know many schools require a doctor's note for an excused absence, yet they don't want us to go to the doctor. And now we are back to the conundrum again.

I always had a hard time with the doctors note for an excused absence. Rarely did I ever take my children to the doctor, but that didn't mean they never got sick. They would have all the same bouts with colds and flu viruses over the years, forcing the school absences, but not sick enough to be seen by a professional medical person. I understand that there are parents out there who will allow their children to "skip" school and call in for them, but it would be hurtful to me when I would call to excuse an ill child and have that not be good enough for the school.

So now we find ourselves in quite the situation with our educational system. Schools are going to have to become more flexible regarding their attendance policies, and more trusting of parents. Sure, there will still be those who will take advantage of the situation, but at this point, it is better to error on the side of caution.

I truly agree with the attendance policy needing to be reveiwed a little more, because there are so many different little viruses that children get these days, when you have no choice from the school to keep them at home so they do not get other children sick, and it is not something to serious for them to go to the doctor, and you just monior them and medicate them at home as always without too much of a medical expense, there seems to be punishement for keeping them at home too much when they are ill. How do we get around this attendance policy and have them see our point of view, I understand as well they're are people with extraordinary circumstances or accidents that may occur that puts theses people in jeapordy, but more understanding on behalf of the attendance officers in these matters would be more helpful. I think as parents we do the best we can but yet get punished when we make a few mistakes, which are not intenntional. Oh, and to top things off people if you are not aware of this, even if your children are more than 10 minutes late for school after the bell rings they are considered late and this after more than one counts against them as abscense, two lates equals one abcense so if you are having these type of issues, be sure to check your children's attendance regulary. I already have issues with the district on this policy and it is because of my children being sick.

I agree. Luckily, my daughter goes to a very small school where all the teachers and faculty know all of the students from pre through 8th grade. It's a little more difficult to get away with things that way. This gives the school a better idea who to trust and who to suspect. I don't take my daughter to the doctor very often either. She was sick a couple of weeks ago (headaches, fever and an awful cough) When my friend's daughter just came down with the same symptoms, she took her to the doctor and was diagnosed with swine flu. They told her it wasn't the serious strain and only prescribed meds because Daddy insisted. I wasn't aware that there was different strains of the swine flu going around. This raises the question about which strain the shot is protecting you from. Just one more reason I don't mess with all those shots.

Thank you Jocelyn for your comment. My kids went to a regular public school, and even though one of my closest friends was the attendance secretary, it did not matter. The rules were you had to have the doctors excuse. It was a bummer. But now I am an empty nester, just worrying about everyone else's kids!
