Seriously.

As many of you know, I root only for professional teams from my home state of Michigan. And trust me, that’s been pretty hard to do lately.

The Detroit Tigers went out and spent a bunch of money and look what it got them — a last place finish in the AL Central Division.

Only seven other clubs spent more money and only the two teams — both from New York —...read more

So who says Oregon State shouldn’t be in the Top 25? I know I don’t. After all, the Beavers took out No. 1 USC last Thursday night in Corvallis.

Oregon State beat the biggest and best team in all the land with a mixture of great gameplanning, powerful offensive linemen and emotion.

Oregon State made USC look like a second-level mid-major and despite the six-point win, the game wasn’t...read more

It was another bad week for the Idaho Vandals — on and off the field.

If you missed it, Idaho lost its third football game this season in another blowout. This time it was fellow WAC bottom feeder Utah State that took it to the Vandals with a 42-17 loss.

According to Sportsline, the Vandals are only better than five other teams in the nation.

The good news: Idaho is playing a team...read more

We’re four weeks into the college football season and here’s what we’ve learned so far in the Western Athletic Conference.

 — Boise State and Fresno State are once again the cream of the crop. Sure the Bulldogs nearly were upended by Toledo last week, but a win is a win.

Boise State of course topped Oregon, and look as though they could play with anyone. We can...read more

Ah, I think it's a bit early for a prediction like that, but that's what Bruce Feldman of ESPN.com is suggesting.

Boise State shot to No. 19 in the AP poll, so at the very least the Broncos are back on the national radar.

... I wrote that the Broncos would not be able to come into Autzen Stadium and take out Oregon — I was dead wrong.

The Broncos were impressive in their 37-32 win over the Ducks.

I must say, though, in my time covering the Broncos, I have not seen them play well on the road against a BCS team. They did Saturday. And now, the team will be back in the national spotlight. If Boise State is...read more

A view from the field before the game

Running game blog from Eugene, Ore.

Boise State holds on

The Broncos took out Oregon with a 37-32, a victory that has to be at least the second best in school history.

And the Ducks are back in it

Oregon isn't going to go away as Darron Thomas hooked up with Ed Dickson for a 19-yard pass. The PAT, though, failed.

With 7:19 to play, the Broncos are hanging on to a 37-26 lead.

We may have a game yet

A view from Autzen Stadium ....
... We got here a few minutes ago and it looks like the weather is going to be decent for the game. Now let's just hope the game will be an interesting one.

As I wrote in my column, I think Boise State can win if they play extremely well. However, I just can't see Boise State coming in to this environment and taking out a team that's this good. If they do, it will be a great win for the Broncos...read more

Autzen Stadium on Friday night — the calm before the storm.
... The Idaho Press-Tribune sent three of us — myself, Dave Southorn and Greg Kreller — here to Eugene, Ore., to cover the big game Saturday with Boise State and Oregon. So far, it's pretty calm.

We went down to the stadium to check it out and we bumped into a few Oregon fans. They were all smiles. We also bumped into a few Bronco fans, too. They seems to be having a good time so far. On the way here we passed (yes, I was speeding) a bunch of Bronco fans — some who were pretty wild — so it looks like there should be a decent showing of Boise State fans for the game. However, I doubt they will be heard with about 52,000 (or more) Duck fans overshadowing the 2,000 Bronco fans.

I rarely pick against Boise State, simply because they always seem to be favored, however, I really can't see the Broncos winning. If they do, they will need one heck of a game in every aspect of the game, including the offensive line to protect young quarterback Kellen Moore.

And here's a video of our trip, enjoy!

I’m not a big fan of college football polls this early in the season. To be frank, the sample size is too small.

I say polls should come out somewhere around Oct. 1. If they did, a team like Michigan (started No. 24 and is now 1-2) wouldn’t even be in the conversation.

Of the two major college football polls — the AP Media Poll and USA Today Coaches’ Poll — only...read more

(AP) Vandals fall short again.
OK, I don't want to toot my own horn here, but I will. I said Idaho would get torched by Western Michigan's Tim Hiller, and I was right. Hiller went off for 4 TDs in the blowout win for the Broncos.

It's just another in a long line of losses in recent memory for the Vandals. Up next, they have two very poor teams to play in Utah State and San Diego State. However, here's the bad news: Both those...read more

The Boise State Broncos were pretty impressive — for the first three drives of the game. After that, there wasn't much to talk about.

But that may be linked to Bowling Green as well, a team that really played a solid second half of football.

"Give them a little credit, they played pretty well," Boise State QB Kellen Moore said. "I think personally, as far as our offense...read more

Falcons finally score

Boise State is simply unable to put this one away. The Broncos allowed Bowling Green a 14-play drive to end with a 4-yard TD grab by Jimmy Scheidler.

The score got the Falcons within 13 points with 11:10 to play.

Third quarter is pretty slow

There has been a few turnovers and a few long dives by Bowling Green, but no change in score.

With 4:18 to play in the...read more

My view for the game today from the big bad new press box
Game time is near and what a great evening for a football game. It's about 82 degrees and sunny here in the Treasure Valley — I don't think you could ask for better weather.

Back to the game ... Bowling Green comes to town with a 1-1 record and most importantly, a win over then-Top 25 Pittsburgh. However, they lost last week to Minnesota, a Big Ten team that plays more like a Sun Belt...read more

The Vandals welcome Tim "The Tool Man" Taylor's team this weekend.
The Idaho Vandals got their first win in 363 days last weekend against Idaho State, a game that wasn’t as close as the 42-27 final score indicated.

For head man Robb Akey, it was his second win as the team’s head coach, and more importantly, a positive step in his tenure.

But let’s not kid ourselves here, the Vandals have still yet to beat a FBS team since Akey took over. The last...read more

(AP photo) Nevada and Texas Tech didn't have the shootout I thought they would.

It looks like Bowling Green really isn't that good, or at least beating Pitt wasn't really that big of a deal.

The Falcons looked pretty poor at home versus the worst team in the Big Ten, Minnesota.

Apparently, Bowling Green had some turnover trouble.

... It was nice to sit back and enjoy a Saturday where I didn't have to work (that translates to: There was no Boise State game this week).

So with that, I watched a bunch of games. Here are a few observations:

— Jake Locker, who is a super-nice guy, has to be the worst Division I passing QB. Seriously, put the celebration penalty aside, this guy missed more open receivers than Ryan...read more

The Western Athletic Conference struck a huge TV deal this past week with ESPN, but is it really that big of deal?

Or at very least, will it make Boise State, Idaho and the other seven WAC teams better, leveling the playing field with other conferences?

Doubt it.

The TV deal — although WAC commissioner Karl Benson wouldn’t say — was reported by the Honolulu Advertiser to...read more

Patrick Jackson in action for La. Tech last weekend.

... I thought Louisiana Tech would be a pretty good team this season (that’s why I picked it to finish third in the WAC), but even I didn’t think they’d have enough to knock off Mississippi State during the opening weekend.

I picked them to lose by one point.

That win over Mississippi State as well as Fresno State’s win over Rutgers showed that this year’s WAC champ...read more

I grew up only a few short miles from the University of Michigan, and as a young man, I saw more Wolverine games than I care to remember.

Heck, I even attended their football camp when I was in high school.

So trust me when I say this, I know what Michigan football means to its millions of fans.

What I saw Saturday — in Michigan’s 2-point loss to Utah — was not the...read more
