Boise State increased its chances for an at-large BCS berth during the weekend when Oregon topped Oregon State, but I still think it's a long-shot for the Broncos.

The recent BCS rankings still have Boise State in ninth, three spots behind Utah, which will get the automatic mid-major berth. However, the choice for the other pick will come down to Boise State and Ohio State. The Broncos are one spot ahead of the Buckeyes, but Boise State has a favorable computer rank of seventh, which is not only higher than OSU, but also USC and Penn State.

I've been around long enough to understand why the BCS folks would pick Ohio State over Boise State, but since the Broncos are ranked higher, who knows, maybe they should get the nod. I guess we'll have to wait six more days to find out.

One interesting note to the BCS this week: There are four mid-majors in the top 12. Of the other two, TCU (No. 11) and Ball State (No. 12), one may play the Broncos. The Ball State matchup, as we reported last week in the IPT, is intriguing, but where would it be played? Here's a solution.

I still think the Broncos will play TCU in the Poinsettia Bowl. We'll know soon enough.

It’s official, the Boise State-Nevada game is sold out. But who really thought it wouldn’t be? After all, it’s not everyday the No. 9 team in the nation comes to town — or is it?

OK, so Texas Tech wasn’t quite ranked No. 9 when it visited, but the Red Raiders were ranked No. 12. In that game, a 35-19 Wolf Pack loss, Mackay Stadium was a few poker chips shy of 25...read more

Steelheads win in OT

Marty Flichel scored his second goal of the night to give the Steelheads the win in OT.

The come-from-behind win puts the Steelheads above the .500 mark for the first time since Nov. 6.

"Said Flichel after the game: "We didn't play well from the start, but anytime you get two points, I guess it's good, right?

Going to OT

With the game tied 2-2...read more

Is La. Tech headed to Shreveport?
According to the Reno Gazette-Journal, the Boise State-Nevada game is close to a sellout.

That would be nice, and it would be the second time this season the Broncos played in a sellout away from Broncos Stadium (at Oregon). Idaho officials called last week’s game a sellout, which it may have been, but Dave Southorn and I clearly agreed it wasn’t. There were a few hundred empty seats...read more

Brent Guy got the boot by Utah State on Monday. (AP photo)
Give him one more year, Mr. Barnes.

That’s what I say about the Brent Guy firing that took place Monday.

Seriously, I hope Utah State athletic director Scott Barnes has a plan, because if he doesn’t, this may be about as ill-advised as another Transporter movie. He was in his fourth season of a five-year contract.

Even Chris Petersen said Monday that it takes four years to get your...read more

A nice view overlooking Lewiston.

We finally made it to the Palouse. I'm up here with our beat writer Dave Southorn and photographer Charlie Litchfield. We had a nice drive up on a great fall Idaho afternoon day.

Not sure how excited I am about the game tomorrow, after all, the spread is Boise State by 36.5 point. I hope it's competitive like it was two years ago. The crowd was great and the whole experience was pretty impressive...read more

Since it’s now November, I think we’re safe to start talking about the BCS. So can the Broncos make it back, even if Utah or TCU are ranked above them?

Maybe.

We all know the top-ranked mid-major will earn a berth, so long as it is ranked in the top 12 of the rankings. This week, Utah is No. 8, Boise State is No. 10 and TCU is No. 12. Utah and TCU play each other Thursday, so one of...read more
