After more than six years here at the Idaho Press-Tribune, this will be the final time I occupy this space.

With much thought and debate, my family and I have decided to move on, setting sail for Southern California. I must confess, I'm pretty happy this winter will be my first without shoveling snow.

For those who don't know me well, I moved to Idaho more than nine years ago from Michigan...read more

Dan Hawkins was close to having a shrine built in his honor outside the varsity center at Boise State prior to taking over as the head coach at Colorado in 2005.

Everyone loved him at Boise State, nationally he was regarded as not only a great football coach, but a better motivator. He was considered college football's version of Phil Jackson.

Heck, I thought he was a great hire, only doubting...read more

I've said it before and I'll say it again, the USA Today's coaches' Top 25 poll is a joke.

When I think about top 25 polls, there are a few criteria for teams deserving of the honor. How well have they played all season? Who have they beat? How did they win? How did they lose?

A three-point loss to a top 10 team (USC over Ohio State) may not be as bad as a seven-point win (Missouri...read more

This is why I love college football. Because every week is so critical and every week brings new drama.

It was a week ago when Boise State was on the fast track to another Bowl Championship Series game. Pasadena? Glendale? Who cares, the Broncos were going to one of the four major bowls. No need to play the other 12 games, right? Not so fast!

Boise State bills itself as a blue-collar team. The Broncos showed that again Thursday night on national TV in a hard-fought win against a Top 25 team.

But what wasn't workman-like was the actions that led to Oregon's LeGarrette Blount's cheap shot of Byron Hout.

On Friday, Blount was suspended for the season. His career, at least collegiately, is over. By no means am I sticking up...read more

Not much.

Those records may seem miles apart, and trust me, as a Detroit Lions fan since the Bill Sims days, they are. But are they really?

Not to the GMs and owners who run the teams.

So far, the Western Athletic Conference is 0-for-3 in bowl games. Ouch!

I must confess, I was pretty torn on which team to pick in the Poinsettia Bowl ( I went with the Broncos by a slim margin), but for the New Mexico Bowl and the Hawaii Bowl, I was pretty confident Fresno State would beat Colorado State and Hawaii would beat a less-than-spectacular Notre Dame team at home.

What do I know? They...read more

When the 63rd Heisman is handed out, it will go to the most popular player, likely not the “most outstanding player” in college football.

This year, there are only three players who were invited to New York for the award presentation. They are Tim Tebow (Florida), Sam Bradford (Oklahoma) and Colt McCoy (Texas) — all QBs.

In the past, there has been as many as six invited. This year could have had that many, too.

Since 2000, only one nonquarterback — Reggie Bush — has won the award.

Heck, even last year, when Tebow won it, I thought Darren McFadden (1,830 rushing yards), who had Herschel Walker-type numbers, should have been the winner.

It just may be that we are in the QB-era for the award. From 1972-83, every winner was a running back. It goes in cycles, I guess.

Along with the three already invited, here’s who should also be in New York tonight:

Shonn Greene, Iowa. Green rushed for 1,729 yards this year.

Graham Harrell, Texas Tech. Harrell passed for nearly 5,000 yards and led Tech to an 11-1 record.

Andre Smith, Alabama or Michael Oher, Ole Miss. Both play O-line, both will be top 10 draft picks.

My vote would go to McCoy. But I also think he should be playing for a national title, so what do I know?

I love this time if year: Coaches who don’t get it done are out the door, while the new ones come rushing in with expectations as high as Kilimanjaro.

Case in point: Gary Andersen, the new head man at Utah State.

Andersen comes to Logan with one failed year of college head coaching experience (Southern Utah), but to his credit, plenty of adequate assistant jobs to get him another chance with a downtrodden program.

Was it a good choice? Who knows. But what we do know is that he has his work cut out for him. After all, Brent Guy, a defensive coordinator like Anderson, only won nine games in four seasons before him.

Right out of the gate, Andersen said “we will win football games” and “Our goal from the very beginning is to take out the cream of the crop in the WAC.”

Take out who, coach?

“Boise State. So here we come,” Andersen proclaimed.

Wow. I love a coach who talks like that. None of this, ‘Win one game at a time’ crap from this guy.

But those are some lofty goals, especially for a team that last had a winning season under the Clinton Administration (1996, if you’re wondering).

I’ll bet the next time Andersen is asked about those statements, and you can bet he will next summer at the WAC media preview, he’ll have a toned-down demeanor.

Boise State increased its chances for an at-large BCS berth during the weekend when Oregon topped Oregon State, but I still think it's a long-shot for the Broncos.

The recent BCS rankings still have Boise State in ninth, three spots behind Utah, which will get the automatic mid-major berth. However, the choice for the other pick will come down to Boise State and Ohio State. The Broncos are one spot ahead of the Buckeyes, but Boise State has a favorable computer rank of seventh, which is not only higher than OSU, but also USC and Penn State.

I've been around long enough to understand why the BCS folks would pick Ohio State over Boise State, but since the Broncos are ranked higher, who knows, maybe they should get the nod. I guess we'll have to wait six more days to find out.

One interesting note to the BCS this week: There are four mid-majors in the top 12. Of the other two, TCU (No. 11) and Ball State (No. 12), one may play the Broncos. The Ball State matchup, as we reported last week in the IPT, is intriguing, but where would it be played? Here's a solution.

I still think the Broncos will play TCU in the Poinsettia Bowl. We'll know soon enough.

Just like in 2004, Boise State may be the odd team out when it comes to a BCS bid.

The good news Sunday afternoon was that the Broncos were in the top 12 of the first installment of the Bowl Championship Series standings. The bad news: Utah is ranked above them and Texas Christian is hot on their tails.

Remember 2004? That’s when Boise State was ranked No.9 in the BCS and got snubbed because of Utah, which was ranked No.6. The Broncos went to the Liberty Bowl and still played a really good Louisville team, while Utah went to the Fiesta Bowl.

Remember, just because the Broncos are in the top 12 (which automatically qualifies a non-BCS team for a BCS berth) doesn’t mean they automatically get a spot if another team, like Utah or TCU, is ahead of them. The Broncos still could get in, especially since they had a great showing last time.

But TCU, ranked two spots behind Boise State at No. 14 has the best shot as it still has to play Utah. It already beat BYU, which is ranked No. 21.

But all this talk is moot if Boise State doesn’t keep on winning.

And this week’s test at San Jose State — a place that gave Hawaii a scare last season and almost topped Boise State the past two times — is a true test. One that, if overlooked, may end its BCS hopes

Autzen Stadium on Friday night — the calm before the storm.
... The Idaho Press-Tribune sent three of us — myself, Dave Southorn and Greg Kreller — here to Eugene, Ore., to cover the big game Saturday with Boise State and Oregon. So far, it's pretty calm.

We went down to the stadium to check it out and we bumped into a few Oregon fans. They were all smiles. We also bumped into a few Bronco fans, too. They seems to be having a good time so far. On the way here we passed (yes, I was speeding) a bunch of Bronco fans — some who were pretty wild — so it looks like there should be a decent showing of Boise State fans for the game. However, I doubt they will be heard with about 52,000 (or more) Duck fans overshadowing the 2,000 Bronco fans.

I rarely pick against Boise State, simply because they always seem to be favored, however, I really can't see the Broncos winning. If they do, they will need one heck of a game in every aspect of the game, including the offensive line to protect young quarterback Kellen Moore.

And here's a video of our trip, enjoy!

My view for the game today from the big bad new press box
Game time is near and what a great evening for a football game. It's about 82 degrees and sunny here in the Treasure Valley — I don't think you could ask for better weather.

The Vandals welcome Tim "The Tool Man" Taylor's team this weekend.
The Idaho Vandals got their first win in 363 days last weekend against Idaho State, a game that wasn’t as close as the 42-27 final score indicated.

For head man Robb Akey, it was his second win as the team’s head coach, and more importantly, a positive step in his tenure.

But let’s not kid ourselves here, the Vandals have still yet to beat a FBS team since Akey took over. The last...read more

(AP photo) Nevada and Texas Tech didn't have the shootout I thought they would.

It looks like Bowling Green really isn't that good, or at least beating Pitt wasn't really that big of a deal.

The Falcons looked pretty poor at home versus the worst team in the Big Ten, Minnesota.

Apparently, Bowling Green had some turnover trouble.

The results are in and it looks like the National Hockey League still has a pulse.

That’s right, the NHL Stanley Cup Finals were a mild hit on network TV.

That’s big news for hockey fans who still like to see their sport on a TV channel that’s not hovering in the 600s of your Direct TV package.

Game 5 of the Stanley Cup Finals between the Detroit Red Wings and Pittsburgh Penguins registered 6.2 million viewers, while Game 6 was a bit higher at 6.8 million.

Again, that’s great news. But it was likely because the games were shown in prime time on NBC.

During the regular season and throughout the playoffs, most all NHL games are Versus, an up-and-coming sports channel known more for bull riding (Yes, the Nampa PBR was on there) and mixed martial arts.

By comparison, the NBA had about 14 million viewers Thursday night for Game 4 of the NBA Finals.

But what if the NHL was on all the time like the NBA? Would it get NBA-type numbers? Who knows?

The thing I take from this is that the NHL still has a pulse, and despite ESPN trying to bury the league by cutting them loose, it’s not going to die any time soon.

...  But who really thought the Vandals and the Aggies were going to be anywhere else when it comes to their preseason football ranking.

A few days ago, the New York Times football writers started ranking all the the 120 Division I teams — yes, 120. Western Kentucky becomes a full-fledged member of the Sun Belt Conference next year, but will play as independent this upcoming season.

Each day they will list the next team until they get to No. 1 sometime later this summer.

As for the Vandals, they were ranked at No. 118, right ahead of Utah State and, you guessed it, Western Kentucky.

Not only is that bad news for the Vandals and Aggies, but also for the WAC. Two of the worst teams in the country and New Mexico State can't be too far ahead of them. The way I see it, half the WAC — like it usually is — will be some of the worst teams in D-I.

I think the WAC will have some pretty solid teams, also. Fresno State should be a Top 25 preseason team, and Boise State should get some serious consideration. Louisiana Tech will be a sleeper as well.

How do you change an image? Draft Matt Ryan. The Atlanta Falcons of course have had to deal with the aftermath of having their starting quarterback sent to prison. Not good for any team to deal with. However, when Mike Vick gets out, he'll likely get a chance to re-join his team — but by the looks of it, it won't be as a QB.

I hope Ryan works out for the Falcons, he's one of the good guys. I still remember how he carried himself when his Boston College Eagles beat Boise State in the 2005 MPC Computers Bowl in Boise.

For the most part, many of the players really didn't really want to go to a bowl in chilly Boise. But they came, and they won. It was a great game and many local fans got to see Ryan throw three TDs against the Broncos.

I was also happy to see Ryan Clady go at No. 12. He was always a quiet one. But I guess he's got some fire inside of him. I think he'll transition well to the NFL.

As for the other Boise State player taken, well, let's just say I think Orlando Scandrick (5th round, No. 143 overall) should have come back for his senior season. With that said, I think he'll make it in the League. He's a great special teams player and has the speed to make it on the field for more than just kickoffs and punts.

On Wednesday, the Colorado State Rams of the Mountain West Conference said goodbye to former Boise State head coach Jen Warden.
Warden somehow parlayed her Bronco coaching job into what likely was a better job (at lateral move at worst) after winning 29 games in three seasons. She never got the team higher than an eighth-place finish.

With the Rams, she was just as bad. In three years, she was 21-69. So in six seasons of Division I coaching, Warden won 50 games. I'm sure you don't have to work too hard to figure out that's less than 10 wins per season. This past season, Warden went 0-16 in conference play. Did I say yet how much Gordy Presnell means to the women's program at Boise State? Well, I just did.

Here's the story from The Coloradoan on Warden getting the boot

Tournament starts back up

That's right, it's Sweet 16 action tonight with several key games of interest. The one I think is interesting is the Western Kentucky-UCLA matchup.

The big, bad national power vs. the upstart. That should be fun. But as the N.Y. Times points out this morning, Western Kentucky is not really an upstart. Did you know the Hilltoppers went to the Final Four in 1971? WKU is also one of the winningest basketball teams of all-time in college hoops.

Personally, I think next to Sparty, WKU has the best mascot in all of sports. Say hello to Big Red below. ...read more

Also, I took a side trip to Waimanalo Beach (not many tourist go to that spot) to hit some sand and take my son in the Pacific for the first time. We had a good day ... (picture of Waimanalo Beach) As for the reason I'm here, there seems to be a lot if buzz around town for this game. I saw several Boise State fans up and down Waikiki on Thursday evening, but most everyone was pretty reserved. I always hate to pick a winner in these type games, but I guess I have to. Here's an excerpt from my column in Friday's paper. ... When you look at these two teams, they have had different paths to their 7-0 WAC records. For Boise State, it has not really been challenged the whole way. The Broncos’ closest battle came against Nevada 69-67 in four overtimes. Hawaii also only beat the Wolf Pack by two points. As for the rest of the WAC, the Broncos have won every other game by significant margins. But for the Warriors, they have had several close calls including two overtime wins against Louisiana Tech and San Jose State. For Boise State, it won those games against the Bulldogs and Spartans by a combined 49 points. In seven WAC games, Boise State has had one challenge, while the Warriors have had one nearly every week ... So who am I taking? I'm sticking with the champs in a close one: Boise State 44, Hawaii 40. I've been wrong before Warrior Nation, but on the season, I'm 45-4 picking WAC games. In the end, I hope for a great game, and whichever team does win, I hope the best for them when it comes time for the BCS selection. ...read more

Anytime a team has nothing to lose, there’s always a chance of an upset.

For the Boise State football team, they know this all too well.

During the past five seasons, the Broncos have always had something to gain, which has been apparent as they have won the last five conference titles and played in five-straight bowl games.

But playing in the Western Athletic Conference, there are several games each season where you know you should win big.

Games your second and third-teamers should win big.

In football vernacular these are known as trap games.

This season, that trap just happened to be a three-week span of teams with no hope at the postseason and not much hope of doing anything other than trying to stick a spike in the tires of teams that do. A win against a top 25 team would make up for a season of blowouts, turnovers and blunders associated with most teams with losing records.

Heading into Saturday afternoon's showdown with San Jose State (3-6 overall), the Broncos were dubbed by oddsmakers as the second best bet to win in a route. Only Tennessee’s 28-point spread over Sun Belt also-ran Louisiana-Lafayette was greater than Boise State’s 25.5 point spread against San Jose State.

But this Boise State team did not overlook the Spartans and won just as they should have with a 42-7 drubbing that wasn't even as close as the 35-point margin of victory.

“I expected a tough game to be honest with you cause they have played us tough two out of three years,” senior safety Marty Tadman said.

The Broncos nearly lost the last two games against the Spartans on the road, and even two seasons ago, when the team only won three games, they hung tough with the Broncos in a 38-21 loss.

But this game was a snoozer, and had no suspense. The team was focused from the first whistle, which is just the way Chris Petersen wants it.

“We bring it to their attention,” said Petersen, who improved his record as the team’s head coach to 21-1 “They know what happened last year. And really the bottom line is, it always comes back to us. It doesn’t matter who we play we need to come out with our A game.”

It took the San Jose State offense nearly three full quarters to surpass the 100-yard marker for total offense. On the game the Spartans only amassed 150 yards of offense.

“They are the same team that we play every year,” SJSU quarterback Adam Tafralis said. “They are a very-together team, I give it to them. Every year they come out and they win ... . They do what they are supposed to do when they are supposed to do it and play like their coaches coach them and that’s why they win.”

After coming off a huge high last week against Fresno State — a game that kept Boise State in first place in the WAC — a letdown was possible, but not on this sunny Saturday afternoon in front of 30,416 Blue and Orange faithful.

For the Broncos, the win wasn’t glitzy, it wasn't done with much flare either, but what it was done with was consistent play, which is always a sign of talented team. On third-down alone the team was near perfection with 10-of-14 conversions.

“We got up, we kept playing our game and didn’t beat ourselves with turnovers or anything,” Tadman said. “We just did our job.”

Which is what they’ll have to continue to do with two more “trap” games looming during the next two weeks in Utah State and Idaho, two teams with one win combined on the season.

When the BCS comes out Sunday, it’ll probably have the Broncos at No.20, or even No. 19.

Boise State moved to 8-1 on the season with its 42-7 route of San Jose State on Saturday.

I see Alabama and South Florida dropping below the Broncos, but Virginia, which beat No. 23 Wake Forest, should leapfrog the Broncos.

As for Hawaii, it may not move at all given the lack of upsets Saturday. I can’t see Arizona State dropping too much from its No. 4 ranking prior to the Sun Devils’ loss to Oregon.

No other teams ranked ahead of the Warriors lost.

Here's a score-by-score rundown of Boise State's 42-7 win over San Jose State.

Broncos 7, Spartans 0

After more than one quarter and nearly 200 yards of offense, the Boise State Broncos finally got in the end zone with a 37-yard TD by freshman running back Jeremy Avery. The play was an option from backup wide receiver Tayon Bissell, who pitched the ball to Avery and scooted for the TD.With 11:35 to play in the second half, the Broncos lead 7-0.

Broncos 14, Spartans 0

The Broncos added to their lead with a 44-yard TD pass from Taylor Tharp to tight end Ryan Putnam. The pass was threaded through the Spartans defense to give the Broncos the two-touchdown lead with 7:17 to play in the half.

Broncos 14, Spartans 7

After several Boise State penalties that kept the Spartans’ drive alive, San Jose State finally capitalized on third-and-goal from the 5 with a TD pass from Adam Tafralis to Kevin Jurovich with 1:29 to play in the first half.

Broncos 21, Spartans 7

The Broncos got right back on the scoreboard with Tharp’s second TD pass of the game this time to freshman Austin Pettis for 12 yards with 34 seconds to play in the half. The drive was started by Austin Smith, who took the kickoff 51 yards to set up the Boise State drive on the San Jose 44.Second Half

Broncos 28, Spartans 7

The Broncos came out from halftime and stopped the Spartans and got the ball right back. Four plays later Ian Johnson, who has missed the last two weeks with an injury, ran in for a 1-yard TD with 11:11 to play in the third quarter.

Broncos 35, Spartans 7

The second drive of the game ended the way the first did, this time the TD was by Tharp to Pettis for a 5-yard strike. With 6:32 to play in the third, the Broncos lead four scores.

That’s right, Friday night’s Boise State exhibition against Evergreen signified the start of the season for the Broncos.

In front of a meager crowd of a little more than 2,000 at Taco Bell Arena, Boise State started the 2007-08 campaign with a lopsided 121-83 win.

The season officially starts next Friday with a home game against Utah Valley State.  Up next, though, is another exhibition game at home Sunday afternoon against Montana-Western.

There are plenty of storylines t follow this season, and we’ll start getting after those later next week, but for now, I thought I’d post my preseason WAC poll.

I just want to say, before I take heat for my picks, I think the top five teams in my poll could all win the WAC, but I had to rank to them without ties, so this is what I came up with:

Predicted order of finish

1. New Mexico State

2. Nevada

3. Boise State

4. Utah State

5. Fresno State

6. Hawaii

7. San Jose St.

8. La. Tech

9. Idaho

Player of the year: Jaycee Carroll, Utah St.

Newcomer of the year: Herb Pope, NMSU

All-WAC first team

Marcelus Kemp, Nevada

Reggie Larry, Boise State

Justin Hawkins, NMSU

Kevin Bell, Fresno St.

The next three weeks of Boise State football games may be about as exciting as watching C-SPAN.

But as boring — and lopsided — as they potentially could be, more importantly, they’ll be huge if the Broncos want to set up their showdown in Oahu with No. 14 Hawaii at the end of the season and possibly make another run at the Bowl Championship Series.

That showdown with Hawaii is a matchup that’s too good to even speculate about, so for now, I won’t.

As boring as the next three games may appear on paper, the Broncos and Chris Petersen I’m sure won’t feel that way. After Saturday’s matchup with San Jose State, the Broncos will travel to Utah State as well as have a home finale with in-state rival Idaho. All three teams are a combined 4-21.

But what’s ahead in the bigger picture for the Broncos is an outside chance at getting back to a BCS game. The team dropped in at No. 22 in this week’s rankings, but need to get to No. 12 — or No. 16 and be ranked ahead of a BCS conference champ — to qualify for the team’s second straight BCS game.

But for that to happen, the Broncos will have to have a ton of luck on their side. First, the team will need Hawaii to stay its course and not lose. I figure if that happens the Warriors should be in the top 12 for sure when the Broncos play them on Nov. 23. That may not be so easy with a tough Fresno State team on the horizon next week, while they have to visit Nevada for a night game in Reno, which is more than chilly in November at night. This week, though, Hawaii is off with a bye.

Secondly, the Broncos obviously can’t lose and will need teams they beat — namely Wyoming and Southern Miss — to keep winning. But lastly, they’ll need some help from several other teams ahead of them to falter, which could happen given the parity we’ve seen this season in college football. One loss this season is starting to look good for any team and who knows, a two-loss team may likely be in a BCS game from one of the major conferences.

The one big negative, however, for Boise State is their strength of schedule, which is softer than Charmin, and not as durable.

This may be the biggest hurdle, which of course is because they lost to Washington, a Pac-10 bottom-feeder.

So, if all that stuff mentioned above falls in Boise State’s favor, they have a good shot, but in reality, they have an outside shot at best.

A loss during this keep-me-awake next three weeks would end any speculation of the BCS or any bowl game, for that matter, that’s not being played in Boise on Dec. 31.

Tonight’s game

Nevada (4-4 overall, 2-2 WAC) at New Mexico State (4-5, 1-3), 6 p.m. ESPN2

For Nevada, it needs two wins to get bowl eligible during its next four games, while New Mexico needs three, since it is playing 13 games. Basically, this matchup is a playoff to see who can get that pivotal fifth win, and more importantly, get closer to becoming bowl eligible.

Line: Nevada by 6.5

What will happen: Nevada will score and so will New Mexico State, I think that’s a safe bet. Both offenses are pretty good, but the edge has to go to Nevada with NMSU not having deep threat Chris Williams. Also, Nevada’s defense — despite giving up 69 points to Boise State — is better.

Pick: Nevada 41, New Mexico State 35

Saturday’s games

San Jose State (3-5, 2-2) at No. 22 Boise State (7-1, 4-0)

The Broncos always struggle with San Jose State on the road, but at home they take care of business. The Spartans are not playing like they were last season, but after losing to Fresno State by 30 in their last game, they should be well-rested and ready to play.

Line: Boise State by 25.5

What will happen: Boise State is just better than San Jose State in nearly ever aspect of the game. The only area that can be a problem is that they put too much into last week’s win at Fresno State. Bottom line, the Broncos’ run game can’t be stopped and should be enough even if they are not entirely focused.

Pick: Boise State 52, San Jose State 21

Louisiana Tech (3-5, 2-3) at  Idaho (1-8, 0-5)

La. Tech has shown it can go to a tough environment against a bad team and win, which it did last week in a 31-21 victory over winless Utah State. Idaho, however, despite only one win, has played tough in nearly every game and time is running short for the Vandals to show progress this season.

Line: La. Tech by 3.5

What will happen: If the Vandals can put together a complete game they could be in for the upset, but if not, the team will continue its 10-game WAC losing streak. The edge I have to give here is to the Bulldogs, who have played all three of the top teams in the WAC (Hawaii, Boise State and Fresno State) tough, with a shot at winning all of them late in the second half.

Pick: La. Tech 35, Idaho 32

Utah State (0-8, 0-4) at Fresno State (5-3, 4-1)

How do you spell revenge? Fresno State will spell it something like this: B-L-O-W-O-U-T.

After last season’s embarrassing loss to Utah State in Logan, you can bet the Bulldogs will be ready to get this game over by halftime. And with the Bulldogs’ stout run game, that should be no problem.

Line: Fresno State by 20.5

What will happen: The Aggies are just a bad football team, while the Bulldogs — aside from last week’s loss to Boise State — are playing just about as good as any WAC team this season. Oh, and one more win for Pat Hill and Co. gets them back to a bowl game.

Pick: Fresno State 41, Utah State 10

Last week: 4-0 overall; 3-1 against the spread

On the season: 34-3 overall; 17-16 against the spread

There’s no way Colt Brennan should be the WAC offensive player of the week this week. Note to WAC office: Colt Brennan, though a pretty darn good QB, will not win the Heisman. Matter-of-fact, he won’t even get an invite to the Downtown Athletic Club in New York as a finalist. Now I like the WAC to get as much pub as the next guy, but throwing six TDs against a weak defense like New Mexico...read more

Not to take any credit, but I did predict the Broncos to win by 14 points Friday night. They actually won by 13, but more importantly, are still in first place with Hawaii. It’s supposed to be a “blackout” here in Fresno, but we’ll se how many people show up in black. As you can see by the photo, there are not a ton of people here about 40 minutes before the game, but it’s supposed to be pretty full here in Bulldog Stadium. My prediction for the game is this: Boise State needs to play a sound defensive game, which they have not done the past few weeks. However, if they can’t, then they are in for a “dog” fight for sure. If Boise State can slow down the Bulldog run game and keep the passing game in check, then a victory is in the card for the Broncos. A hazy Fresno that is. I’m sure everyone has been watching the wildfires down in SoCal, and after flying to L.A. I can tell you that there is a lot of smoke in that area of the country. Boise State avenged its loss during the 2005 season with a 45-21 win over Fresno State last season in Bronco Stadium. Check out the video for highlights from last November's game. Friday’s game should be a bit more of a challenge for the Broncos. Fresno State was not playing like it could have last year, and after talking with a few Bulldog players Monday, they told me why. Basically the players said that they team didn’t have any unity and was one major reason they were 4-8 and missed a bowl game for the first time in a long while. But if you need a refresher of what went on the last time Boise State played in Fresno, the Broncos lost, 27-7 in a game where the offense was not very good. And trust me, this is a heated rivalry, but not one so much of hate and disdain, but more one of respect. And speaking of Fresno’s rise back to the top of the WAC, click here for a story from the Fresno Bee on just that. ...read more

But as you can see in this link to a screen shot of the game, it looks nothing like him. At least they got his No. 5 jersey right. But if I remember from past games, the cover boy isn't even in the game since they are no longer included on the current roster...read more

It seems there’s no sneaking up on anyone from now on for the Boise State football team. No new news from Mandel with this report, but pretty impressive for Boise State to be...read more

One thing was crystal clear Friday night at Bronco Stadium — Taylor Tharp and Bush Hamdan are the front-runners for the starting QB job. I think most of us knew that going into Spring Camp, but considering how much playing time these two guys got, we now know it. Mike Coughlin, though, played some with the No. 1s, so he may still have an outside shot. Coach Pete said he will sit down...read more

The Boise State football team was back at it Monday, and with only one more practice this week (on Thursday), Spring Camp is nearing an end. The team of course will end spring practice Friday night with the annual Blue-Orange game at 6 p.m. on The Blue of Bronco Stadium. Today’s practice was inside because of the rain. Two scrimmages down, one to go. So who’s the front-runner for the starting QB job? Two weeks ago, I didn’t want to make any predictions as to whom would succeed Jared Zabransky as the team’s next starting quarterback. This week — I’ll will. As it stands now, I see this whole thing as a two-horse race between senior Taylor Tharp and junior Bush Hamdan. After...read more

The Boise State football wrapped up its final practice this week before Friday’s scrimmage, and it was without two players. The Boise State football team was back on The Blue on Tuesday, kicking off the third week of Spring Camp. This week, though, will culminate with the second scrimmage of spring — it should...read more

Friday night was the first of three spring scrimmages, and there is plenty to work on for this group of Boise State Broncos. Like any first spring, or even fall scrimmage, the defense usually dominates. Although the offense — led by four different QBs — did manage to piece together several long drives, it was never successful when it came to getting into the end zone. The...read more

Thursday was the 7th day of spring ball and what a day it was — for the offense. Head coach Chris Petersen changed a few things up Thursday including the method in which to decide who would run “gassers at the end of practice. Tuesday marked the sixth day of Spring Camp and with only one more practice (on Thursday) before the team’s first scrimmage, it looks like the defense may dominate. Thursday marked the final day of no pads this spring for the Broncos. Today the team will suit up in full armor. This should be interesting from a few standpoints. The Boise State football team had only one practice this afternoon and the defense continues to be the big news. During the final scrimmage session of the afternoon, the defensive backs and linebackers continued to shine with their pass defense. Starting linebacker Colt Brooks made an impressive interception as quarterback Jared Zabransky riffled a pass to Jerard Rabb. Rabb was unable to hold...read more

The team worked on its special team units Monday morning, specifically on onside kickoff. You’ll see of lot of the skill players on the “hands team this season if they decide they need to do it. There were also a few lighter moments today in camp. During the final scrimmage the defense took on a new look as Andrew Browning and Philip Edwards played defensive back for the final...read more

The Boise State fans have voted, and they expect Ian Johnson to have a great year. Our poll on Johnson’s rushing total for the upcoming season resulted in a tie for first with both 1,001-1,200 yards and 1,200-1,400 earning 40 percent of the vote, respectively. That means 80 percent of voters think he will have the 14th 1,000-yard season in Bronco history. If he rushes for more than 1,300...read more

The Boise State football team only had one afternoon practice session Friday, and the players looked to be dragging a bit after the Thursday night scrimmage. Midway through the practice, however, the mood began to change with a lot of hooting and hollering from the players and coaches to liven things up. What followed was a pretty good showing in a scrimmage session by the offense along with a few...read more

The Broncos’ first scrimmage of Fall Camp came and went, and one thing is for sure this season: The defense looks really good. I may be that the new zone that defensive coordinator Justin Wilcox is putting in could be the answer to those big plays the Broncos have given up in the past. Sure the offense struggled against the No. 1 defense, but I think it only means the defense is going...read more

The Boise State football team finished its second double-day of Fall Camp on Wednesday. With temperatures in the high 80s today the Broncos had another cool day on The Blue. The afternoon practice wasn’t too much different than the previous ones, the team worked a bunch on special teams as well as their normal group drills. During the first scrimmage session on the afternoon, Colt Brooks picked off a Nick Lomax pass that was deflected. Lomax hustled to the ball and knocked it out Brooks’ grasp. Marty Tadman also came up with a nice pass break-up as well. The moment of the day came during a drill that included the offensive lineman trying to stop the pass rush of the defensive line and linebackers. Ryan Clady matched up with Brooks and despite the size difference, the two had two heated battles. The Broncos next practice Friday afternoon, followed by another double-day session Saturday. Remember, Thursday is the first fall scrimmage and the Broncos are only three weeks away from kicking off the season....read more

The Broncos had a light walk-through this morning, but got back to The Blue for the afternoon practice session in full dress — helmets, shoulder pads and yes, even pants. The team has worn pants sparingly during the first few practices, opting for team-issued blue shorts with their jersey number on them instead. The weather was much more conducive for the team, with overcast clouds that...read more

The second day of practice started a bit slow with some dropped passes, but midway through the afternoon session with the veterans, the tempo picked up considerably. The afternoon practice was a lot like the morning practice in terms of how the team looked. For the first day, the team looked to be in mid-season form. One player that stood out was Ian Johnson. After going down during Spring Camp with a hernia injury, he ran like he was on a mission to be the full-time No.1 running back this fall. He caught passes out of the backfield and ran extremely hard. Quarterbacks: Jared Zabransky looked like a well-oiled machine Wednesday, hooking up on several pass plays with Drisan James during the scrimmage sessions. Taylor Tharp appeared to have found a favorite receiver in Jared Hunter, while Bush Hamdan’s arm looked to be just as strong as it always has. Coach Pete was thrilled to finally be back at practice with his team “It seems like we have been waiting a long time, he said. On defense, the linebacker crew should live up to the hype for sure this season. Korey Hall looked like Korey Hall as he snagged a Bush Hamdan pass and ran it to the make-shift end zone at the soccer complex. Injuries: Derek Schouman took a spill during a drill and was walked off the field by a trainer. Dennis Ellis was nursing a sore knee that was wrapped in ice. ALSO ... Today at the Boas Soccer and Tennis Complex the Boise State football team kicked off its 2006 season. Along with all the newcomers, several other Boise State veterans (none were starters) joined in during the summer session that also included several of last season’s redshirt players. It was clear that most of these guys were on campus this summer and participated in player-run practices. During most of the two-plus hour session, the new guys looked pretty solid. The one thing I noticed this morning was the size of the new recruits. Mike Coughlin looked nearly as tall as fellow quarterback Nick Lomax, who is 6-foot-6. He was fairly accurate in his one-on-one quarterback drills with coach Bryan Harsin. Xavier Lucas also looked like he may be the go-to-guy in the future with his 6-foot-4 frame. Evan Surratt, a 6-2 defensive back, looked pretty good, too. I’m not sure if it was mandatory, but the entire offensive line showed up to watch at around 10:45. Other key players such as Jared Zabransky, Brad Lau, Legadu Naanee and Korey Hall were also there to watch and see how the “new guys were doing. “They were running around and showing their athletic ability, Hall said after practice. Also ... Steven Reveles and Sione Tavake — both transfers — looked comfortable running after the quarterbacks during the scrimmage sessions. ... Derrell Acrey was impressive during sprint drills. ... Both new running backs Jeremy Avery and Jarvis Hodge were there. ... Some of the starting lineman who watched — including offensive line coach Sean Kugler — wore shirts that read “O-Line Pride....read more

The team is slated to start Fall Camp on Wednesday with the newcomers at 9:30 a.m., while the veterans will hit the field at 4:30 p.m. As most of you know, the outlook for this year’s team is pretty good, and after talking to several players this offseason, there seems to be a new spark and an added edge after finishing the season with four...read more

Will there be another running back? Chris Petersen may have put one rumor to rest Wednesday afternoon during the WAC Media Preview in downtown Boise. There has been a lot made of one more running back joining the Broncos this summer, but that might be the last thing on his mind as Petersen was quick to praise Ian Johnson as the team’s No. 1 running threat. “I know that’s...read more

Jared Zabransky is a one of the top quarterbacks in the WAC for sure, but if he gives up his day job, he may have a future in golf. 000007.jpgOn Tuesday, during the WAC Media Preview golf scramble, I got a chance to tee it up with Z. After about five hours in the heat we finished with an 8-under par score. I was also paired with Fresno State sports information director Steve Weakland and Dave Chaffin from the WAC office in Denver. We had a great time, but I only wish I could have helped a bit more during the scramble. The thing is, Zabransky hits the ball a country mile — and pretty straight, too. And when he misses a shot (which wasn’t very often), he apologized to us. Idaho quarterback Steve Wichman appeared to be pretty good as well, his team came in with an 11-under par on the day. Maybe I can talk my bosses into sponsoring a charity Broncos-Vandals golf match. I’ll get back to you on that one. The photo, however, was about my only bright spot. I knocked in a putt to give us a birdie. Z obviously approved....read more

Boise State's depth chart at running back may have gotten a bit deeper. According to Boise State officials, Jeremy Avery has signed a non-binding financial aid agreement with the Broncos.
