This is why I love college football. Because every week is so critical and every week brings new drama.

It was a week ago when Boise State was on the fast track to another Bowl Championship Series game. Pasadena? Glendale? Who cares, the Broncos were going to one of the four major bowls. No need to play the other 12 games, right? Not so fast!

Just when Bronco Nation was feeling great about beating Oregon and the Broncos' first win at home against a ranked team, the glass slipper quickly cracked into a million pieces.

Thanks a lot, BYU Cougars.

When BYU topped Oklahoma, 14-13, it put the Cougars smackdab in the driver's seat to secure the lone automatic berth allotted to the mid-majors.

If you think the Broncos can compete with the Cougars in the polls, think again. While the Broncos play virtually no team of note the rest of the way, BYU gets to play two teams currently in the Top 25 — Utah and TCU — and maybe a third in Florida State which is currently No. 32. All of the games are in Provo, too, and BYU will favored to win all of them.

So while the Broncos' victory was historic, and it put them in the top 12 after the first week, it's not going to be good enough if the Cougars win out.

The bar has been set high to get to a BCS game as a midmajor. Simply winning all your games is no longer good enough.

Or is it?

This all may change again after today's slate of games are in the books.
