Boise State bills itself as a blue-collar team. The Broncos showed that again Thursday night on national TV in a hard-fought win against a Top 25 team.

But what wasn't workman-like was the actions that led to Oregon's LeGarrette Blount's cheap shot of Byron Hout.

On Friday, Blount was suspended for the season. His career, at least collegiately, is over. By no means am I sticking up for that type of cowardly behavior. As one Duck fan wrote me, he got exactly what he deserved. He put a giant blemish on their program and their school.

But what does Hout deserve? If you look at the replay, he obviously said something inappropriate (while laughing) to Blount while slapping him on his shoulder pad.

I know it was something inappropriate because Boise State head coach Chris Petersen was right there scolding him a half second before Blount hit Hout in the face. Petersen continued to say something after Hout got up from the blow by Blount.

On Friday, Boise State said it was not going to suspend Hout for his actions, but will be punished in-house, which is certainly deserved. WAC commissioner Karl Benson told ESPN that the conference is still reviewing it and will see where it falls with regard to their sportsmanship policy.

If Hout doesn't provoke Blount, would any of this happen? Who knows — he may still have gone crazy.

Boise State has always prided itself on respecting its opponents. Thursday night, what Hout did, though not nearly on the same repulsive level as Blount, was anything but respect.

I'd be willing to bet is Blount hadn't been spouting off about the Ass Beating Boise State needed on the news before the game, nobody would have said anything. It was nearly inevitable for someone to say something to him after the beat down given to Oregon.

Hout and your scoreboard operator who continually showed the punch should be punished. Without provocation this wouldn't have happened. Blount was leaving the field. When the fans saw the numerous replays, that incited the slurs hurled at Blount from the fans. Remember...this all started last year with Ellis Powers' malicious, illegal hit on Masoli. It all goes back to that.

It must be ok to trash talk before the game but not after. Coach Pete will deliver exactly what Hout deserves. Hout will wish he would have kept his mouth shut by the time this next week ends.

Good points Kelly Also, no one has really talked about the media whipping Blount's pregame comments to death. With all of the emotion involved you wonder why what happened didn't touch off a riot. And what gives a sportswriter the wisdom to judge everything said or done with penaltys that should be applied?

Blount is gone and should be. That behavior has no place in football. Hout should also get some sort of visible punishment. His actions led directly to this and taunting is not acceptable either. I hope Boise State steps up like Oregon did.

You must not have participated in or watched many sports. If a single "trash talking event" meritted suspension, the benches of almost every sports team would be empty. Verbal unsportsmanlike conduct merits running stadium steps... what Blount did merits expulsion. If this happened in a different college forum, like a debate competition, the student would be on the streets, where Blount belongs.

Here at the university of Oregon, a progressive liberal school, we take care of our own while at the same time delivering what most think is a ridiculously harsh punishment. Its called compassion. They are ready to give the man a second chance for an easy mistake instigated by a boise player. It is an offense to modern humanity that you would suggest that Blount be simply thrown onto the street. Although that's what most graduated duck fans do believe should be done, if only for the damage that LGB did to the Ducks once very respectable reputation. It's now evolving into a contest as to which team wants more respect for a cleaner program. Whoever delivers the relatively harshest punishment wins. Kelly has set the bar pretty high.

Ray is exactly right. Blount received a very harsh punishment, but more for his antics leaving the field than for hitting Hout. Without instigation by Hout, Blount never would have hit Hout. Without the escalation courtesy of replay after replay on the scoreboard, Boise State fans may not have taunted Blount with racial slurs--and Blount may have been able to regain self control. We'll never know for sure on this last part. However, what we do know is that Blount has lost a LOT from this suspension. I'm glad UO is not completely kicking Blount to the curb and I hope Blount is able to take advantage of his scholarship. He's likely at his crossroads, and I hope he chooses a route that leads to a successful life that contributes positively to society, regardless of whether he gets another chance at football.
