Do you remember the house Dan fixed up for the final challenge on Design Star? The owner's name was Gail. She contacted me the other day to say how great her house is — even four months later — and how great Dan is. I asked if she would answer questions for me, and she did. Gail sent them back in the wee hours of the morning. I hope you'll find it as interesting as I did.

How much time did you actually interact with Dan for the redesign?

We met Dan after he found out he was one of the final two. He interviewed us and then we walked the space. He asked us what colors we do and don't like and what kinds of space we like (i.e., tropical, zen, etc.). We had only met for the equivalent of one half hour and then we had to leave and couldn't return until Sunday. So, we finished at midnight on Wednesday and then they revealed the house to us on Mother's Day Sunday — what a Mother's Day gift!! We only got to see Dan when they taped us seeing the house and then we never got to see him again, but through the magic of Facebook, I was recently able to thank him.

What did you think about the special built-ins and personal touches?

I was blown away by what Dan did to our house. When I walked in the door and saw the picture Dan had blown up of Jackie and me, I knew that this man got us. That picture was in the corner of my living room - almost in hiding - and holds such a special place in my heart. I had so many other pictures throughout the house. The fact that he picked the one that meant the most to me just touched my heart. It was never discussed beforehand; he did that on his own.

Also, it wasn't shown, but in my bedroom, the headboard comes forward to reveal even more storage — going down to the floor.

I love the mirrored cabinet above the fireplace. When I first walked in, I noticed there was no TV in the room anymore. I thought, "Well, that's ok. Look at this beautiful living room." Then when he showed us the TV inside — I was in awe.

I apologize that I couldn't find other words than oh my god, but your head is going a thousand miles a minute and your brain doesn't have time to register everything. Plus, they want all your reactions caught on tape. So everything really is the element of surprise. I really do have other words in my vocabulary!

Did you watch the whole contest unfold week by week?

Yes.

What surprised you most about the show?

First, that Dan didn't win. Secondly, how they edit. They interviewed us for a long time both before we met Dan, when we met Dan and after they revealed the house. All of that only amounted to a few minutes on tape. What was funny is when Dan asked what Jackie and I like to do together. They edited it - I don't dance with her.

The thing that shocked me most was what I just learned recently. I read that Dan's grandfather died the day that he found out he was one of the finalists and he found out just before meeting us. If this is true, he is truly the consummate professional. He was completely charming and warm and just as sweet as he appears on camera. I can't believe how composed he was given the circumstances. It really made me admire him even more.

I was also surprised that Antonio wasn't eliminated after the celebrity challenge. I thought Lonni did a better job and Antonio was going through the motions.

I assume you didn't know the final winner until it was revealed Sunday. Or did you?

From watching the shows, I thought the judges had already made up their minds prior to the final show. I wasn't surprised.

What did you think when Antonio's name was called?

I felt sad that Dan didn't win, but I know that Dan has a long and fruitful career ahead of him. So, I know that he will be a huge success. He is an extremely talented and gifted artist. His talent will not go unnoticed.

What do you think about all the negativity?

It saddens me that people feel the need to express so much negativity. I'm happy for Antonio. As my mother always said, "That's why they created chocolate and vanilla." I think there is room for everyone and I know Antonio will reach a different audience then Dan. I think in the times we live in, we need to focus more on positive energy — it comes back to you tenfold.

Will you watch Antonio's show?

I grew up in New Jersey so I grew up with guys like Antonio. And, as one blogger so eloquently put it, if I wanted to see that kind of a design show, I'd watch the Sopranos. My tastes are more of Dan's design style.

Were you a Design Star fan before HGTV approached you about your home makeover?

I wish I could say yes, but I had never seen it before this season.

Were you hesitant to say "yes?"

I answered a flyer on my door. I ordinarily wouldn't have done that, but I had just attended a program that made me open and more receptive to going out of my comfort zone. So, while at first I thought perhaps it was a hoax, I'm glad I answered it. (Apparently, they had gone door to door, but I wasn't home.)—- I hope it isn't one where they give them a Q-tip and then tell them to try and make a couch out of it. Luckily we got real furniture — lol.

Has the makeover helped you "start that new life?"

I wish I could say everything is bright and rosy. I'm working towards that, but, unfortunately, I am looking for a job (like most of America — at least I'm in good company.) So, if you know of anyone hiring in the Los Angeles area, I'm available!!!

Do you have any other comments or observations that you would like to share?

I wish both Dan and Antonio the best of luck. They are both talented in their own right. I think the thing that was so wonderful is that the judges really did give us two completely different designers. It was fun to watch and so honored that I was a part of it. I really am thankful to HGTV for this wonderful opportunity.

America is waiting, impatiently, for HGTV to move ahead at full speed and bring Dan forward into the spotlight. Dan clearly has so much to offer, both as a designer and a model for character and integrity. While some find the outpouring of negativity towards the other guy disturbing, the behaviors Antonio displays are well out of the mainstream, and it's not surprising (or even unfair) that so many viewers find him objectionable. Folks are rightfully angry with the judges, with HGTV, and taken aback by the off-key character of the "winning" competitor. Beyond that, in regards to talent, Dan has won the hearts and minds of a wide majority of viewers with his markedly superior design ability and depth of knowledge. Once HGTV gets its act together and gives fans/viewers a new focus, we can all move forward into positive territory. Bring it on, HGTV, and perhaps, just perhaps, we will be able to accept your apology for what was a serious blunder. Dan Vickery, and no other, is America's choice for Season 4 Design Star.

what a delightful lady! even though they edited her words wrong, what is wrong about her daughter and her dancing? It actually was delightful mind picture. but they actually do, as Mother and daughter, they dance the dance of life! I hope she gets good job and both of them get through tough times! Very gracious person!

How wonderful of Gail to share her account of Dan's design with us. I wish we could get the scoop from all the people whose spaces were redone to see how livable they are and what they think of their space now that the camera crews are gone. Gail brings up such a good point, that Dan was able to read her and her daughter so well even with such a short introduction. This shows Dan's abilities go beyond simple design, he gets into people's hearts and heads and creates spaces for them even they could not have imagined. Gail, if Dan did this great a job under all his constraints, can you even fathom what he could do with more time!!!?? When I found out about his grandfather's passing correlating with this final challenge, I, too, was amazed that he could do that well under those circumstances. I'm guessing Dan's grandfather was right there alongside him in spirit, giving him the strength to carry on. I also imagine Dan's upbringing and close-knit family values helped him, too. A special side note to Dan's aunt, Vickie, you have been in a tough position, but have done a great job. Thank you. You were upfront about being biased, yet you still managed to be more than fair to everyone. I do understand the call for civility. However, those of us who choose not to watch Antonio's show are not doing so out of spite. We simply do not want him in our homes. To hold him up as a "real man" is a huge step backwards and an insult to women, as well as men like my husband of nearly 30 years who is as masculine as they come but would never, ever behave like Antonio. My husband has manners...even after 3 decades he never forgets to thank me when I cook dinner, still opens my car door, is polite to everyone from the janitor to the CEO. Dan reminds me of a younger version of my hubby. Gail, I hope you find a job you love very soon. You & your daughter are lovely. It was so great seeing your reactions to the designs. (Sorry, I can't help but point out Antonio's family didn't seem quite as enthused about their space!) You may think your lack of words was problematic, but actually it spoke volumes. And when you laid down on the bed and said this feels like home, that said it all. Thanks again for letting Dan's Fans know how you feel about his work.

I have to say nothing Gail says surprises me. I at this point am sick of HGTV and the way this unfolded. They obiviously have no taste. I will not watch Antonios show. It has nothing to do with Dan either. Just that I think my 10 year old could do what Antonio has done. Im over this. HGTV lost a loyal fan.

Thank you so much, Vickie, for giving us the opportunity to gain further insight into the final Design Star episode. I thoroughly enjoyed reading the brief interview with Gail about her thoughts on Dan and her great home redesign. I have to admit that while I watched all of the previous episodes of this year's Design Star season, I just couldn't handle the prospect of so much "face" time with the other guy, so I did not watch the final episode. The photos above are the first I have seen of Dan's work in the last challenge, and I am, not surprisingly, very impressed. It speaks volumes to Dan's character and his ability as an interior designer. Unfortunately, it also speaks volumes about the judges (and HGTV's) dismal and unacceptable handling of the final challenge. Their judgement and rationale was seriously flawed and suspect. However, the outpouring of support from America for Dan and his body of work is a clear testament to his on-screen performance and true star power. Dan Vickery is AMERICA'S CHOICE for Design Star winner. Judges, HGTV, what WERE you thinking?

What a wonderful interview and I wish you the best of luck with your job search. I'm curious if there are any interviews with the homeowners of the house Antonio designed. I'm a true fan of Dan and would love to see him get a tv show - he truly earned it. If it is ok to add information for a website that is a signature petition asking for a tv show, please add it for us http://thedanproject.201w.com If you have to edit it out, we understand. we will still do whatever we can to get it out there :) Hope Dan still wants a tv show, now that he will be busy with his online show (congrats, can't wait) But we sure do want to invite him into our homes so we can view his many talents and great design. Good Luck to All and Thank You!

I ditto all of the previous comments which I have posted on other sites (which was the first time I have ever joined in, because of my disappointment.) Again, thank you Gail for your comments. I was sooo pleased to hear them. Beth, I did not know about Dan's online show. Where do I find out more about it. Thank you
