Tonight's the big one — again.

All season long it seems like the Cascade Conference lead has been up for grabs between one team or another — usually with defending national champion Oregon Tech a part of the equation.

That is true once again tonight when the College of Idaho men host the No. 5-ranked Owls in a battle for a share of the league's top spot.

A share, as both teams...read more

NAMPA — Sometimes you need just a little help to get over a hurdle.

That hurdle for the Northwest Nazarene women's basketball team — second-half slip-ups.

Headed into their home game at the Johnson Sports Center on Thursday with Montana State-Billings, the Crusaders found themselves in front of the Yellowjackets in record and in the Great Northwest Athletic Conference standings.

But...read more

Another week, and another weekend with the hoop teams on the road.

No problem, there's track action at the Idaho Center's Jacksons Track today, so head over and cheer for the local teams as they begin the indoor season in earnest.

Yep, I've been trying to support the track athletes as much as possible, for a couple of reasons.

First, they often get overlooked during the basketball...read more

CALDWELL — Well, there is always a bright side, right?

That's what the Coyote men are looking at as the College of Idaho simply couldn't hit shots in its 60-57 loss to Cascade on Tuesday in a makeup game of the teams' Cascade Conference tilt just before Christmas.

Why look at the bright side?

Well, after winning six straight, the C of I men found themselves alone atop the league...read more

NAMPA — It always makes for a special day — Hall of Fame inductions.

Northwest Nazarene enjoyed one of those special days Saturday, adding four new members to its Athletic Hall of Fame.

A dozen previous inductees gathered to be part of the ceremony, watching, and ceremonially escorting the newcomers onto the court, to their plaque, and into the Hall of Fame, during halftime of the NNU...read more

Let me start off this week with some thoughts on coaching.

No, nothing too profound — though I have done some coaching in the youth hockey ranks — but rather add to my small but noteworthy list of great coaching moments I've witnesses as a reporter.

Two of the best belong to former College of Idaho coach Tim Mooney, the first a wonderful rant that got him ejected at Northwest Nazarene...read more

NAMPA — It certainly wasn't a perfect homecoming for Nichole Schutte.

The Nampa High and Northwest Nazarene grad found herself back at the Johnson Sports Complex, just down the road from her high school, this week with her new team — Schutte is an assistant coach for the Western Oregon women's basketball team.

Wednesday night, during the Wolves practice in Nampa, she got a chance...read more

The College of Idaho's Craig McGee drives to the basket against Northwest Christian in their game in Caldwell on Jan. 3.

Shoot, where's all the hoops!

Well, another week gone by, and plenty to talk about, even if the Coyotes and Crusaders aren't in town. But let's put the hardwood on hold for a moment and talk about what is on tap locally — swimming.

Yep, the Coyotes swim team hosts Pacific Lutheran, a pretty strong team, Saturday and Sunday. Both days the action in the pool begins at 1 p.m., and...read more

Record effort a sign of teamwork

By Mike Stetson

CALDWELL - Tuesday's win by the College of Idaho women looked very impressive, but more so when you consider what it means.

The 15th-ranked Coyotes now have the longest win streak in program history, having won 14 straight after a season-opening loss.

An impressive record considering how they team, has done it - teamwork...read more

Northwest Nazarene's Lindsay Brady escapes the defensive pressure of the College of Idaho's Christon Vander Esch on New Year's Eve in a classh of Cnayon County colleges.

Sorry I'm a day late, but I'm back with a few ramblings on the week in NNU and C of I sports.

Rivalry game

Let's start with the ladies rivalry game. Both teams showed just how tough they are, with Crusaders showing up strong in the first half and the Coyotes after the break.

A good game for both teams, as the Crusaders got a nice win over a very good team, a chance to build some confidence...read more
