College of Idaho's Haley Butcher, left, chases down Concordia's Denise Benedict, right, as she makes the tag in the first inning of the second game of a doubleheader Saturday afternoon at the College of Idaho.

CALDWELL — Just two weeks ago, College of Idaho coach Al Mendiola wonder where his team's offense was, and where the Yotes focus lay.

Two weeks later, there's no doubt in anyone's mind as the College of Idaho softball team has run of 13 wins in 14 games, including a dramatic last at-bat win in extra inning over NCAA Division I foe Boise State.

During that stretch they Yotes have...read more

After considering a brief rant on the weather — it always seems to get stormy about the time I have to go outside and cover games — instead I'll just jump right into all the fun on the diamonds.

Let's start in Caldwell, with the team on pace for a World Series berth: The C of I softball team.

Two weeks back the Yotes turned up their intensity with a sweep of Southern Oregon in...read more

The College of Idaho's Cody Brubaker, left, tries to slide back to first as Lewis-Clark State's Ben Ornelas blocks the bag and makes the tag out during a pick-off play in the first inning Friday afternoon at Wolfe Field.

What's happened to the Coyotes?

The College of Idaho baseball team looked poised to host the NAIA West tournament after taking three of four from British Columbia and holding a 3-game edge in the loss column on the T-birds to start April.

Then things changed quick.

A pair of road losses at Concordia, then a 1-of-4 weekend north of the border, and the C of I suddenly needed help to host the...read more

Congrats to the Coyote softball team, who proved just how good they are Saturday demolishing Southern Oregon. The Raiders came into the doubleheader the "Sweethearts" of the Cascade Conference with surprise wins over just about everybody, and a two-game lead in the standings over the College of Idaho.

But the C of I made short work of the Raiders, proving that the Yotes are truly still...read more

College of Idaho and Emmett High star Katie Zillner is getting the chance to play on.

The All-American pitcher who led the Coyotes to the NAIA Softball World Series last spring, leaves for Germany on Monday where she'll play semi-pro softball.

"I think it's exciting," said C of I coach Al Mendiola, who coached Zillner for three season. "... That just tells you the reputation...read more

Photo by: Mike Vogt/IPTCollege of Idaho's Amy Rhoades (wearing helmet) is congratudaed by her teammates at the plate after hitting a game-winning, solo home run in the eighth inning to beat Oregon Tech 2-1 in game one Friday afternoon at College of Idaho.

OK, I'll admit it, I was cheering for Amy Rhoades.

Friday, the Coyote shortstop came up with a huge effort, driving in three of the College of Idaho's four runs, including lifting the C of I to a 2-1 win over Oregon Tech with her walk-off home run in the eighth inning of Game 1.

Aren't I suppose to be non-biased?

Heck no, I work for the Canyon County newspaper and I like to see our...read more

CALDWELL — Winning the West sure ain't easy.

The College of Idaho baseball team looked to have things well in hand a week ago — three games up on British Columbia in the loss column with a dozen games left in league play, including four head-to-head with the Thunderbirds.

But coach Shawn Humberger and the 23rd-ranked Coyotes (24-10, 19-4 NAIA West) knew darn well that no lead was...read more

Well, after a night at the PBR - yep, went to cover bull-riding - I'm back to rant a bit about college sports.

And it makes sense to start with College of Idaho softball - the only games I actually saw in person this week as the Coyotes took out Eastern Oregon.

Last week I said the games were a perfect tune-up for the Yotes, both to give the C of I a quick lead in the Cascade Conference and...read more
